The TOEFL test is designed to evaluate a student’s ability to use and understand English in an academic setting. First introduced in 1964, it was for a long time the international standard for English proficiency. While less so today, where the IELTS test is increasingly applied as the key international standard, the TOEFL test continues to be recognised by a large number of academic and government institutions around the English-speaking world.
